A Writer's Insight: Sherry Chiger
Sherry Chiger is a freelance writer who specialises in B2B and B2C writing. Learn about her story in the first of the new FWN Writer's Insight series.
For the Freelance Writing Network’s first profile, I spoke to Sherry Chiger, a writer and editor with over 20 years of experience in the business. If you’re considering branching out your freelance work to include B2B (business-to-business) and/or B2C (business-to-consumer) copywriting, Sherry’s expertise is well worth a read.
About Sherry
Sherry Chiger began her career as a copyeditor for consumer magazines before jumping over to B2B (business-to-business) publishing, eventually becoming an award-winning editorial director for trade franchises in the US and the UK. From there she made another leap, writing product copy, blog posts, and other content for a home furnishings brand. During this time she freelanced, writing and editing everything from children’s books to white papers, blog posts to product descriptions, on topics ranging from AI in marketing to the best brunches in Brooklyn. Her freelance contacts and experience came in especially handy after she was downsized from her full-time job in January 2024.

What kind of freelance writing fills your schedule day to day?
It really varies (which is one reason I love freelance writing). A few months back I was writing mostly blog posts and product copy related to home decor; currently it’s content related to AI and marketing.
How do you find work in your niche, and how did you find it when you were getting started?
Both then and now, referrals and contacts have accounted for most of my business. I’ve done some cold outreach—if I read about a startup or a company expansion in one of my niches, I’ll contact a person there offering to write content to help their business grow—but to be honest I’ve gotten only a handful of assignments that way over the years. I wish I had a better answer so that I could get more business!
