It’s a good one for you today.
I’ve put together an updated collection of 29 publications that, from my research, are paying writers $2 per word. It’s an increasingly rare rate to find in freelance writing and I’ll be trying to update this list when I come across more.
These publications vary hugely in the content they cover including women’s fashion, parenting, science, technology, politics, culture and so much more. Whatever you write about, there’s something for you here.
Please note that rates can and do change on the fly, these are all accurate as of my research and recent reports from writers.
The New Republic is a liberal American publisher focused on domestic politics, news, culture, and the arts. They welcome freelance pitches and unsolicited submissions via email. Full details about what they want can be found here but pay is usually between $2-3 per word.
MIT Technology Review is a digitally oriented independent media company that explains the social and political impacts of the newest technologies. The magazine is wholly owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and published bi-monthly. The magazine accepts pitches for news, features, profiles, op-eds, and more. They pay as much as $2 per word for reported pieces. Pitch details here.
Cosmopolitan, the magazine for smart, spirited women, is the biggest women's magazine brand in the world and the number one women's glossy in the UK. Reports from writers suggest that Cosmo UK are often paying around the $2 an article rate. Check this page out for more information.
Maxim is a men’s magazine that covers some of the regular topics men are concerned about including women, sports, relationships, sex, careers. Reports from writers do vary, but some have been paid in the $2 per word region. Contact details for the publication can be found here.
