18 Publications Paying for Mental Health & Psychology Writing
A collection of publications paying freelancers for writing about mental health, psychology, neurodivergence and more.
Hello!
Welcome to the latest paid edition of the Freelance Writing Network. This week I’ve collected 18 publications paying freelancers for writing about mental health, psychology, divergence and more.
Mental health is something that we all deal with in one way or another, and many of us like to write about our experiences in the form of personal essays as well as about the latest science and news in the subject area. This list covers a range of publications that are looking specifically for this kind of writing.
Remember: this is a mix of English language publications across the world. For freelancers, it doesn’t generally matter where you are pitching unless you have a strong link to a particular place. Editors are used to receiving freelance pitches from anywhere!
Are you looking for an editing service for your fiction? Do you want to get your work polished with the idea of getting published in future?
Check out George’s Editing Journeys, an editing service that helps to ensure that your novel or short story is polished, professional, and ready for publication - be that self-published or traditionally with an agent and published.
On with the publications, and as always I hope you can find something useful here! If you get commissioned from a publication you find as part of this list, I’d love to hear about it.
I’d also strongly recommend researching each publication thoroughly before sending your pitch in to an editor.
Psychology Today explores every aspect of human behavior, from the cultural trends that reflect the way we think to the inner workings of individual brains. Psychologists and mental health professionals read PT, as do curious and intelligent lay readers. They accept freelance pitches, details here. They have paid $0.50-$0.90/word in the past.
Healthline is committed to providing you with trustworthy, accessible, and accurate information so you’re equipped to care for your health and wellness. They accept various pitches, including those based around mental health, with their editorial process found here. Pay has been in the $0.28-$0.33/word range in the past.
Vox is a general interest publication that helps their audience understand the world around them and includes writing related to mental health. Often this is personal essay based and tends to pay around $0.30 a word. Details of how to pitch can be found here.
